never buy the service plan from best buy

there may be instances where the service plan they try to pawn off on you at best buy actually benefits the consumer, but i haven't run across that yet. what a freaking scam ~ has it ever benefitted you? i like this "buy our insurance, and whenever you come to get something fixed we have a reason we won't" policy.

Service plans are a scam in general due to the overlap in the plan and the manufacturer's warranty.

Since product failures follow the Weibull distribution (remember the "bathtub" plot from stats class), retailers are giving coverage during the period that you need it least.

Nope, it's actually worked for me before, and to Best Buy's disadvantage! A few years back I bought a scanner and unplugged it from the wall, then mixed up the plugs, used the wrong voltage and, um, blew the scanner (oopsie). I took it to Best Buy and just told them it died. And voilĂ ! I got a brand new scanner. So if nobody else, it's at least worked to my advantage.

Yep it's worked for me. A few years ago I had a monitor that went up on me two years after purchase. I had a four year service plan. I received a brand new monitor.
